The events of the past week have me thinking about the state of the union more than usual as may be true of many Americans. Those events have had the effect of surfacing talk about how we got into the stupid part of the war on terror, like attacking the wrong country, that has cost us and others many lives and trillions in treasure.
I recall that during WW2 when we had another smart Democrat as president, Roosevelt, and, some won't believe this, actual conservatives in politics, it was considered bad taste and counter productive to reap massive war profits. Following that, after the war, we had a very smart Republican president, Eisenhower, who figured since the very rich have the most to gain if the country gets its economics flourishing again, it made sense to tax the crap out of them to make it happen. Both those presidents were here for us when taxes exceeded 90% on the very rich individuals and companies and windfall profits had to wait until we could all benefit from the effort to fix what was broken. We all did very well based on their wisdom.
Now, we think differently. Now it is OK to drive the country into the ground, deny American charity to the poor, destroy the middle class, and other major crimes of conscience, all based on some BS put in force when we had a Hollywood actor as president, that is the wealth will trickle down. Has anybody but a small percentage get any of it on them?
After WW2 I was old enough and I voted for President Eisenhower, a Republican, because he was the right man for the job at the time, even as I was already more of a liberal. I don't see anything like that happening anymore. Now we just stick to our twisted ideological cancer like it was good for us. That's pretty strange, don't you think?
